Two men are brutally murdered during a botched break-in at a bio-science laboratory. The lab is dedicated to improving bio-fuel production. Rumor in the energy community is that they may be nearing a breakthrough.

During the robbery and murder, one person gets away.

Tracking and finding the killer falls to a former Navy officer and current international rugby referee working for the Office of Directed Discretionary Operations.

Stuart Mateus and his longtime partner Steve Benson are recalled from their day jobs to chase the murderer from seedy streets in St. Louis, to the National Mall in Washington, D.C., to the ancient city of Lisbon, Portugal, climaxing in a showdown on the volcanic island of Pico in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.

Mateus is a born leader and quick to find solutions when confronted with a problem. Benson is a veterinarian who talks first and asks questions later who is as good with a microscope as he is with his fists.

By harnessing the ability of algae to reproduce quickly, a vast amount of bio-fuel production could be manufactured at a fraction of the cost and time it takes to produce ethanol from corn or switch grass. Cheap, plentiful, green energy would be revolutionize energy production, but destroy Middle East economies.

Is the suspect working for the Iraqis, another foreign government or someone else?

The chase continues while the tangled fabric of the crime comes undone among an unraveling tapestry of international terrorists, crime bosses, and unseen forces.
